Feeling Stuck? How to Start Moving Forward

Ever feel like you’re going through the motions, checking boxes, but not really moving ahead? That restless, quiet frustration, that sense that life is happening around you while you’re treading water, that’s stuckness.

It’s not just being “unmotivated” or “in a rut.” It shows up as:

  • Tasks that feel dull or meaningless.

  • Full days that leave you oddly unsatisfied.

  • That persistent whisper: “Something has to change.”

Here’s the thing: stuckness isn’t just a roadblock, it’s a signal pointing toward what’s next. It often shows up after transitions, when you’ve accomplished what you needed to but aren’t sure where to go next, or when past doubts or setbacks have dulled your confidence and clarity.

Why we get stuck: the brain’s wiring

Part of why stuckness can feel so persistent is how our brains are wired. Neural pathways form habits, patterns of thought and behaviour that the brain defaults to because they’re efficient. That’s great for routine tasks, but when these same pathways take over bigger parts of your life, they can make change feel slow or even impossible.

The good news: the brain is adaptable. By introducing new actions, thoughts, and perspectives, we can gradually rewire these pathways. Every small, intentional step strengthens new circuits, making forward movement easier and more natural over time.

Six Ways to Get Unstuck and Start Moving

You don’t need a grand leap, just one deliberate move to kickstart momentum. Here’s how:

1. Guard your energy, even in small ways
Pause before saying yes, delay replying to messages, or take a few quiet minutes to check in with yourself. That saved energy can fuel a tiny first step, trying a short course, testing a new idea, or jotting a plan on paper.

2. Choose your listeners wisely
Not everyone can carry your story. Share with people who listen without rushing to fix or judge. Feeling understood makes it easier to hear your own voice again.

3. Let go of perfect explanations
You don’t need flawless words. Saying, “I’m figuring this out” or “I’m noticing what I want to change” reconnects you to your experience and frees your mind.

4. Be your own ally
Instead of self-criticism, speak kindly: “This is tough, and I’m doing the best I can.” Compassion isn’t indulgent, it’s fuel.

5. Celebrate tiny wins
Resting, saying no, or showing up when it’s hard, all of it counts. Small wins are the building blocks of bigger change.

6. Shake up the ordinary
Stuckness thrives on routine. Take a new route, tweak a habit, rearrange your space, or experiment with your morning ritual. Small disruptions spark fresh perspectives and movement.

Progress doesn’t need to be linear. Notice subtle shifts, changes in how you feel or think, because these often appear before visible change. Every small action helps rewire your brain toward forward momentum.

Feeling stuck is normal and temporary. Support, including counselling, can help you decode what stuckness is signaling and guide you gently toward forward movement, one intentional step at a time.
